Futbol Club Barcelona (Catalan pronunciation: [fubˈbɔɫ ˈkɫub bərsəˈɫonə] ( listen)), also known as Barcelona and familiarly as Barça,^{[note 1]} is a professional football club, based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English and Catalan footballers led by Joan Gamper, the club has become a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism, hence the motto "Més que un club" (More than a club). Unlike many other football clubs, the supporters own and operate Barcelona. It is the second most valuable sports team in the world, worth $3.2 billion, and the world's second-richest football club in terms of revenue, with an annual turnover of $613 million.^[1][2] The official Barcelona anthem is the "Cant del Barça", written by Jaume Picas and Josep Maria Espinàs.^[3]

Barcelona is the joint most successful club in Spain, in terms of overall official titles won (80). It has won 22 La Liga, 26 Copa del Rey, 11 Supercopa de España, 2 Copa Eva Duarte and 2 Copa de la Liga trophies, as well as being the record holder for the latter four competitions. In international club football, Barcelona has won four UEFA Champions League, a record four UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, four UEFA Super Cup, a record three Inter-Cities Fairs Cup^{[note 2]} and a record two FIFA Club World Cup trophies.^[4] Barcelona was ranked first in the IFFHS Club World Ranking for 1997, 2009, 2011 and 2012^[5] and currently occupies the second position on the UEFA club rankings.^[6] The club has a long-standing rivalry with Real Madrid; matches between the two teams are referred to as "El Clásico".

Barcelona is one of the most supported teams in the world, and has the largest social media following in the world among sports teams.^[7][8][9] Barcelona's players have won a record number of Ballon d'Or awards (10), as well as a record number of FIFA World Player of the Year awards (7). In 2010, the club created history when three players who came through its youth academy (Messi, Iniesta & Xavi) were chosen as the three best players in the world, having bagged the top spots at the FIFA Ballon d'Or, an unprecedented feat for players from the same football school.

Barcelona was one of the founding members of La Liga, and is one of three clubs which have never been relegated from the top division, along with Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid. In 2009, Barcelona became the first Spanish club to win thecontinental treble consisting of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. That same year, it also became the first football club ever to win six out of six competitions in a single year, thus completing the sextuple, comprising the aforementioned treble and the Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.^[10] In 2011, the Blaugrana again became European champions and won a total of five titles, missing out only on the Copa del Rey (in which they finished runners-up). This Barcelona team, which reached a record six consecutive Champions League semi-finals and won 14 trophies in just four years under Guardiola's charge, is considered by some managers, players and experts to be the greatest team of all time.^[11][12][13]

Le Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, plus connu sous le nom de Real Madrid (souvent plus simplement appelé Real ou en Espagne, El Madrid) est un club professionnel espagnol de football basé à Madrid. C'est le club le plus couronné de succès dans le football espagnol. Il a été élu meilleur club du xx^e siècle par la FIFA. Il a remporté 32 titres en Liga, 19 Coupes d'Espagne et un record de 10Ligues des Champions et 2 Coupes de l'UEFA. Le mot Real figurant dans le nom du club signifie Royal en espagnol, titre accordé au club par le roi Alphonse XIII d'Espagne en 1920.

Fondé en 1902, le Real Madrid a conquis les sommets du football espagnol à partir du milieu des années 1950 sous la présidence deSantiago Bernabéu. Dans les années 1940, le club, son stade et ses installations durent être reconstruits à la suite de la guerre civile espagnole. Le club acquit une importance majeure dans le football espagnol et européen dans les années 1950. Dans les années 1980, le club possédait l'une des meilleures équipes d'Europe, connue sous le surnom de La Quinta del Buitre (La bande du vautour, du fait du surnom d'Emilio Butragueño) et remporta 2 Coupes de l'UEFA, 5 titres consécutifs de champion d'Espagne, une Coupe d'Espagne et trois supercoupes d'Espagne. Le Real Madrid est réputé pour avoir régulièrement rassemblé les meilleurs joueurs du monde dans ses rangs, ce qui a valu à ses joueurs le surnom de Galactiques dans les années 2000.

À domicile, le club évolue habituellement tout en blanc même si initialement il arborait une bande bleue en travers du maillot (qui subsiste dans le blason actuel du club). Son blason fut changé plusieurs fois pour être modernisé. L'actuel blason est une version modifiée du premier blason adopté dans les années 1920. Le club évolue depuis 1947 au Stade Santiago Bernabéu, stade d'une capacité de 81 044 places, situé dans le centre de Madrid.

Le Real Madrid entretient des rivalités de longue date avec certains clubs, notamment le FC Barcelone (la rivalité entre les deux clubs est l'une des plus célèbres de l'histoire du football, chaque match les opposant est appelé El Clásico)2 et l'Atlético de Madrid (autre grand club de Madrid), ainsi que tous les autres clubs de Liga excepté l'Espanyol de Barcelone. Contrairement à la plupart des clubs européens, les membres du Real Madrid (socios) ont toujours été propriétaires du club et l'ont toujours géré depuis sa création.

Le Real Madrid est le club qui produit le plus de revenus au monde (650 millions de dollars) et, en 2013, il est devenu le premier club en termes de valeur (3,44 milliards de dollars)3.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento2,3, dit Pelé, né le 23 octobre 1940 à Três Corações (Brésil, État du Minas Gerais), est un footballeurbrésilien évoluant au poste d'attaquant du milieu des années 1950 au milieu des années 1970.

Considéré comme une figure majeure du football et fréquemment présenté comme le meilleur joueur de l'histoire, il est le seul footballeur à avoir été champion du monde à trois reprises, en 1958, 1962 et 1970 avec la sélection brésilienne. Il compte également un palmarès exceptionnel avec les deux clubs professionnels qu'il a connu (Santos FC et New York Cosmos) dont la Coupe intercontinentale (1962 et 1963), la Copa Libertadores (1962 et 1963), le championnat des États-Unis (1977) et à onze reprises le championnat de São Paulo dans les années 1950 et 1960 mais également plusieurs récompenses individuelles comme le prix d'athlète du siècle par le CIO, joueur du XX^esiècle par la FIFA et le ballon d'Or d'honneur le 13 janvier 20144. Il fait partie de l'équipe mondiale du xx^e siècle.

Depuis sa retraite sportive, Pelé est l'ambassadeur pour l'ONU et l'UNESCO à l'Éducation, l'Écologie et l'Environnement. Il continue également à prêter son image à diverses entreprises et a occupé le poste de ministre des sports du Brésil entre 1995 et 1998. Pour autant, il n'a pas quitté le monde du football puisqu'il a été l'ambassadeur international de la Coupe du monde de 2014 qui s'est déroulée au Brésil. En 2011, il est nommé par Paul Kemsley (en) président d'honneur de New York Cosmos, son ancien club à New York dont la réintégration en Major League Soccer est envisagée pour les prochaines années.                

Association football

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer,[2] is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world's most popular sport.[3][4][5][6] The game is played on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal. The goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in play and then only in their penalty area. Outfield players mostly use their feet to strike or pass the ball, but may use their head or torso to strike the ball instead. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is level at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout depending on the format of the competition. The Laws of the Game were originally codified in England by The Football Association in 1863. Association football is governed internationally by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA; French: Fédération Internationale de Football Association) which organises a World Cup every four years.[7]
